Librestream

When Symbol Technologies, a manufacturer and supplier of mobile data capture devices (i.e. barcode scanners and more) closed its doors in Winnipeg, they offered local employees the opportunity to relocate to their New York office.  All declined. Instead, these Winnipeg based, former Symbol employees used their synergistic working background, along with their extensive technical experience, to create Librestream in 2003.

The organization was based on an evident need for collaboration between engineers from around the world; to see what someone else sees, remotely.  By the middle of 2007, their product, Onsight was developed and launched and received immediate recognition.  Onsight includes a range of handheld, wireless video camera devices and video collaboration software applications that provides live visual collaboration in many different situations.  Procter and Gamble immediately saw the benefit of Onsight and are one of Librestream’s key customers.  They used the Onsight Mobile Video Collaboration system to monitor their suppliers and improve uptime of critical production line equipment.  With the device, quality inspection and troubleshooting is completed remotely instead of flying in experts.

Librestream promotes saving time and money and increasing productivity by keeping experts at their desk, rather than tying them up in days of travel.  This provides the technical experts the ability to coach multiple field technicians on how to handle a specific situation and still be present in the corporate office.  They ensure product accuracy to such an extent that customers like Lexmark can even identify flaws in printer heads simply by viewing a printed dot matrix sample page over the Onsight device.

Librestream has a vast client list and partners with a variety of well known, successful organizations.  Cisco, the world-wide leader in video networking, is one of Librestream’s most prominent partners.  They work together to combine mobile video collaboration with the ability to quickly locate available experts and communicate across multiple locations.  Librestream has more recently sold their devices to NASA and were involved in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.

Librestream employs 35 people locally in Winnipeg and another five abroad, primarily in the US.  Another area of growth is in the field of Telemedicine and they already have devices present in every province in Canada.  Patients in remote communities can receive immediate diagnosis in critical care situations with substantial cost savings.

Winnipeg’s Librestream is bridging gaps by connecting physical workers with experts in their field.  This has resulted in success on both the national and international stage.  Their advancements in video collaboration will continue to benefit the healthcare field, and manufacturing and engineering industries. As their logo states, this changes everything.
